Auction action galore

By Mario Cywinski

'Tis the season to be at an auction. As the weather seems to get warmer, the amount of auctions taking place increases with the thermostat.

The first auction we will look at, took place on April 4 and 5 and was put on by Charles G. Firby Auctions. Many diverse lots were available, of which colour seemed to be the word of the day.

Lot 358, a 43-cent imperforate block of four, VF, original gum, never-hinged, of dinosaurs, which was estimated to sell for $4,000 was a very interesting rarity.

Along the same lines, lot 356, a 43-cent imprint imperforate strip of five, XF, original gum, never-hinged featuring Canadian rivers, was estimated to sell for $4,000 as well. A very colourful cover, lot 643, was also available and estimated to sell for $1,500. The cover featured the 'True Fruit Soda Fountain,' and was send from Montreal in 1902 to Three Rivers.

Many other lots were also available including Canadian large and small Queen issues, admiral issues, as well as stamps from the Maritime provinces and the United States.

For more information and for prices realized, visit www.firbyauctions.com or contact at (888) FirbyUS.

Eastern mail sale

Eastern Auctions Ltd., was set to run its mail sale closing April 23, with no buyer's premium, which is a big deal for many.

Many interesting lots were available, including one of the more valuable Canadian small lots. Lot 318, a 3-pence Red stamp, slightly in at upper left, fine, original gum, which was estimated at $1,875.

Lot 669, a 1963 $1 Canadian Exports stamp in a plate block of four, VF, never-hinged, which is very rare according to Eastern, was estimated at $1,000.

Stamps and postal history public auction

The Regency-Superior sale did not see much Canadian content, however, a few were available and they were estimated to be sold for quite a pretty penny.

Lot 1349, a 1851 Victoria 12-pence, VF, was estimated to go for $1,000. While lot 1350, a 1857 Victoria 6-pence sterling, VF, and lot 1351, an 1858 Victoria ½-penny, fine, were estimated to sell for $500 and $250 respectively.

The auction was mainly filled with American postal stamps, however, other nations were also represented.
